Order of christian funerals. The funeral liturgy (MASS) takes place at the parish of the deceased so that the entire community has a chance to pray for, remember and commend to God the soul of the deceased. Even though not all parts are necessarily celebrated at the time of death, due to various pastoral circumstances, it is important to understand the meaning and role of each of these parts. It was mandated for use in the United States in the English edition as of October 1, 1989. Through private prayer and public funeral rites, we strengthen our faith and hope, comfort those who mourn, and bury the bodily remains of the deceased with care befitting what was the Temple of the Holy Spirit. They provide opportunities for the community of faith to mourn, to heal and to pray for eternal peace and rest for their loved ones.
